Glimpses
1.
Thought gathers soot and gloom
The higher it climbs,
Like smoke of a burning body.
Mathematics, Geometry and Logic are blue flame,
Burning to number and form.
Chemistry and Physics are flickering yellow.
All else is sweetened by process of combustion:
Ecology is sooty,
Psychology is smutty,
Economics is smoky,
Sociology coal-black,
Technology jet-black,
Politics just black (and white);
Philosophy is smog,
Religion is smudgy,
Irreligion is dark cloud,
Absolute is funereal or livid,
Metaphysician’s ideal brunette, or singed Christ.
A fragrance hangs in the air...
4.
Rudder and sail
Strain to no avail,
If the helmsman keeps changing his mind
Or thinks he should have resigned.
‘He must have a poor grasp of his subject,’
